One way is that some tv's are called monitors as there will be a 15pin port for it. Another is by the tv out on your vid card. It will be either RCA, S-Video or both. If you don't have this, then you can not connect to the tv with the existing adapter.
If RCA, just get a standard video RCA cable, if S-video, just get a S-video cable and connect them usually through one of your Video1 or Video2 modes on the tv.
Sound still comes from your computer unless you want to hook that up to a receiver, your tv, or just keep the computer speakers hooked up. If you want to hook it up to anything, you will need the proper cables, like mini jack to RCA for the tv or receiver, or optical/digital for DD and DTS for movies through the receiver.
The settings for tv-out is done through your video properties of your display adapter on your computer. Some may require either the tv or the monitor to be used at a time while newer ones will allow you to have output to both at the same time, like with nView for nVidia cards.
