I see that globiumz has received excellent advice on how to set up a wireless network plus the security links to make
sure he won't be sharing his bandwidth with anyone unauthorized near by. Because anyone within that 300 foot line of sight can also be good to go.

But that also addresses the ignored part of the problem because the downstairs PC and the two upstairs will probably not be line of sight. And then it can also become a PC location problem, a how thick is the floor and what is it made of problem, and how good are the sending and receiving antennas problem. Lots of innovative ways to address that latter problem but some uncertainty inheritant.

Since you already have the downstairs equipment get it fired up and ready to go which costs nothing. And before you spend big bucks on upstairs equipment, see if can borrow a friend's wifi enable lap test to see if they can see the downstairs PC which be one way to hedge your bets.

Well, I already got a card to connect to a wirless network on the one upstairs (the internet less one). So it looks like I'm good to go hardware wise. 😀

Then for the one computer down and one up problem, its pretty obvious on how to proceed.

a. Get downstairs computer up and running with internet and wireless downstairs.

b. Get upstairs computer wireless enabled at final location intended
then either

a. The upstairs computer can then use the wireless connection from the downstairs computer
or not

1. If yes, you are done--proceed with upstairs computer #2 and make the more money
investment in upstairs computer #2.

2. IF no, move upstairs computer #1 to line of sight with downstairs computer and then see
if wireless networking works or not. Which then tells you if you don't have wireless
correctly implemented or if you have a computer location problem you need to work on.
