How to connect a laptop (VGA) to a HDTV?

I need to go from a laptop that has VGA only, to my HDTV which has everything except VGA. I've tried the VGA-Component(RGB) adapter cables and that did not work. I also tried the VGA/DVI adapter and connected it to a DVI-HDMI cable; that didn't work either. Am I doing something wrong or is there another alternative?

When I connect through my desktop, everything works great since my desktop has DVI on it.

does your laptop have a plug that looks like s-video? look carefully and count the pins, it is likely an HDTV out: a proprietary splitter used by either nvidia or AMD, that is different for each, you plug a dongle to it and it gives you component out, which is the same or argueably better quality then DVI / HDMI

my s-video has 4 pins. is that going to work or does it need to be 7 pins?
