how to configure network for foxmarks-type documents?

I am trying to figure out how to configure my network to have the same functionality in my documents as foxmarks. Basically, I want for my documents to be available locally, yet sync with a server when available. I have a recently configured Server 2003 domain controller at my disposal, as well as a linux box should I need it. I'm new with Server 2003, so I'm still trying to figure out how to configure the file server and DFS settings, as well as enable Shadow Copies. I'm not too worried about version control (I did previously use SVN for this, but I can't stand the extra folders everywhere, and it was causing conflicts with syncing).

Any other information could be provided if necessary.
