how to compress AVI files to a smaller size?

i recently started using my camcorder and been playing movies from my tapes into the puter. For some reason the program im using (MGI Videowave 5) will only make the file into a .AVI file format and nothing else.

So an 8 min avi file is about 1.6GB on my drive! Thats insanly huge. Ive seen other 10 min clips and are only about 100mb or smaller but they are in mpeg format. How can i convert avi to mpeg format and get the file size smaller??

thanks!

Use a codec that has a better compression ratio, I doubt the one you're using does any lossfull compression at all. DivX is a popular one.
