How to combine 2x 2GB and 2x 4GB DDR3?

So I have 2x 2GB DDR3 1600 and I just got 2x 4GB DDR3 1600..

I tried to just add the new ones to what was already there (4 slots total) and I couldn't boot.

So I basically just replaced the 2x 2GB with the 2x 4GB so now I'm sitting at 8GB which is probably just fine, but was wondering how I would have to plug the sticks in if I wanted to get the 12 GB total, is that even worth the trouble?

Thanks!

It should work. Try moving the 2x4 to the opposite DIMMS, then putting in the 2gb's. Then if that doesnt boot reset CMOS and try to boot again.

This will depend on the actual specs of the two sets of RAM, what your BIOS settings are, how many memory channels your CPU/mobo platform has, and which DIMM slots you put each stick of each set into.

Just did this last week. Had 2x2 GB DDR3 1600 (Ripjaws) and added a 2x4 Gb kit of same specs. Was straight forward. Just insert and boot and it worked.

Maybe check MB manual so that the 2x2 and 2x4 are on the same channel In my case, one kit must go into slots 1+3 and the other kit in slots 2+4.
