How to clone Vista to new HD?

CloE

I have two 36gb raptors in raid 0, want to copy the entire OS and files to the single new raptors.

I use Aconis ture image 10 to creative backup of (C🙂 then restore to the new 150GB raptors (J🙂 when I try to boot with the new HD, Vista said can't find window.

I also tried to get WD data tool software but it doesn't support vista.

any alternatives? what I did wrong with true image 10?

What you did wrong was to use the BACKUP function rather than the CLONE function. You need to use TI-10 to CREATE a bootable CD, and then use that - independent of your OS. It will clone a RAID array to a single drive. Use the manual method.

Don't try to do this from within your OS, Vista or whatever. The key is to be OS free when cloning.

I try your method using TI-10 to clone the old C: after it's done and booting, window said can't start winload.exe due to hardware change, require me to boot vista DVD and repair function.

the problem is the repair function can't fix anything. i don't know does Vista detected the hardware changes and prevent me to load windows.

it's probably the case. my computer does has raid drivers installed, now it's just SATA single HD. anyway to fix it?

OK - why not boot the Vista DVD as requested and fix the problem? You may just need to re-activate. Changing HDDs should not cause that to happen in the same machine. But, . . . there are strange things going on with Vista.

The Vista DVD can't find the problem or fix it. The new HD only goes to the green loading bar screen then will restart the computer over and over.

CloE were you able to fix the problem?

Here's a tip on cloning with TrueImage. Do not do it from within Vista or XP. Create the bootable CD, then use it to boot the machine. You will see a nice Linux-based GUI and the entire process is done by the CD. It doesn't matter what you are cloning, it will work. Use the Manual method, delete partitions on the target, keep data on the source, and if the drives are the same size, As Is works - otherwise proportional.

I do my Vista drive weekly. When finished, I use the newly cloned drive and it boots perfectly.

The real key to good cloning is not to involve the operating system on the system's HDD. It has to exit Windows to do it anyway. By using the bootable CD, you avoid possible pitfalls and errors.

I can't do a backup on the true image boot up cd. I have tried and it always gives me errors. Seems like I can restore though, which is strange.

The one thing I notice that is strange though is my C: partition Windows and applications for some reason changes to D: and my D: partition games changes to C: when booting up under the true image bootup cd.

Could this be causing the problems of not being able to do a backup under the true image boot up cd please?

No, you really are not listening to what I'm saying. Don't confuse cloning with backup. Backup is useless unless restored. Cloning is a duplicate drive immediately bootable and useable. No restoration needed.

The drive letter shifts you are observing arer relative only to the Acronis process - example: I am cloning a drive that has a partition. The source is then drives C and D, and the target drive is E and F. It has nothing to do with the actual drive letters.

By the same token, a RAID array is seen as a SCSI drive. I clone a RAID 1 array of two SATA drives to a single PATA drive via USB link. Never had any errors as long as I control everything manually as described above.

Ok well if I do this won't I still get errors because the true image boot up cd wants to switch my drive letters for the windows and game partition ? Do I need the same size drive as well to be able to do a cloning ?

Like I said, in in-process drive letters are irrelevant. They have no effect on the final drive letters when you use the cloned drive. And, for different size drives, in the manual selection process, choose "Proportionally." That way the source drive will be cloned proportionally to the target drive. I really should create a Powerpoint on this and make it available. 🙂
