How to clean windows drive to free space?

I installed War hammer: Dawn of War and it copied temp files into my windows drive and now I'm getting messages sthat my windows drive is very low on space. I tried to use disk cleaner which the computer suggested to use, but when I try to clear space, I get a message saying it may take a couple of minutes to analyze the disk and that the program is 'Compressing old files'. I waited about two hours for this and still it was 'compressing old files'. What can I do to clean my windows drive?

go into add/remove programs, remove all the programs that you dont use. then go to start>run>cleanmgr and clean up everything in it
