I toss them in the washing machine with whatever laundry detergent I have. NO softener. I don't use softener in any towels either. It can retard their ability to absorb water.

I've just used dish soap and let them air dry, worked fine for me.

Unscented laundry detergent and no softener and mine are fine years later.

Washing machine is fine. What is in your washing machine and detergent that could hurt a strong polyester fabric?

Frayed edges for one, you can get edgeless towels but they're not cheap. frayed edges can lead to tiny scratches. Also they seem to always loose some of the softness when you wash them in a machine. Even on delicate with good detergent they just aren't good. I find it easier and it's faster to wash them with the Chemicalguys towel cleaner. So it's kind of a win-win.

I started buying microfiber towels when I was into detailing my car 10 or more years ago. They were the new thing at that time, and relatively expensive. No one ever talked about special cleaning procedures beyond simply washing them separately and not drying them with anything else, especially not dryer sheets. All of my towels still work pretty well 10 years later.

for towels? I just throw them in with the rest of the laundry

For eyeglass type ones? I leave them in a shirt pocket and wash them.

I have some microfiber towels that are 5 years old and work just as good as new. I have some eyeglass ones that I use every day that are over a year old and they work just great.

Side note: Can't wait to get insurance so I can get contacts again.
