How to clean leather boots?

Tonight I got some crap on my timberland boots. Some dirt, plus my jeans got wet and decided to stain the back of my boots. What can I do to clean the boots?

Saddle soap?

Yeah, saddle soap. Then after maybe a light coat of mink oil or similar penetrating sealant (waterproofing/ helps resist penetrating stains).

NOTE: Mink oil & similar will probably darken the leather - try it somewhere less noticable first.
