How to clean laptop keyboard

keyboards get pretty nasty huh? I think there's gunk stuck between my keys, and its hard to press my "m" key and my password has an "m" in it =(

Someone told me to use a dishwasher or even a sink, but basically this means I need to let my laptop keyboard dry out for a few days huh?

Anyways, is this realistic? Do ppl wash their keyboards?

erm....what exactly are you trying to clean...

Everything underneath the keys and between the keys.. just like your typical desktop keyboard clean..

I usually just turn it upside down and bang bang bang (can't really do that with a laptop) and it'snasty... Hard to deal with when u drop sticky food inside .... that's why im inquiring about the dishwasher strategy

Since you might actually be serious:
No, do not put your lapton in the dishwasher or sink.

A can of compressed air and a Q-tip with some alcohol is your first step. If that doesn't work, you may have to remove the keyboard to get at the bottom side.

Ok I would not actually stick my laptop into the dishwasher.. I meant take the keyboard out and wash that?

I've heard of tons of people sticking their desktop keyboards into dishwashers, although I believe it's a lot better to take off the top half, leaving the electronics and wiring outside....

As long as you let it dry, it should be fine right?

I wouldn?t. Most have circuitry and metal plates on the bottom. Use compressed air and wash it in isopropyl alcohol.

Gotcha. What about for my desktop keyboard? You can usually take off the top part of the keyboard, leaving the circuitry behind right?

Don't use chemical to clean your keyboard.. It might dry out the rubber under the keys.

Take the keyboard out and use a hot pressure washer on it. Use a hairdryer to accelerate the drying time.

Alright, a serious reply here:
I clean mine often. What I do is first use a stiff-bristled, "Throw away" paint brush (About 3" wide, short bristles), turn it upside down and vigourosly brush the KB, forcing it behind the keys somewhat, tap the KB and repeat until the gunk stops falling.

Then, to clean the face of the keys, I lightly mist it with a "Formula 409" type cleaner, run the paint brush back and forth, then up and down several times (depending on how dirty it is), then wipe with a paper towel, working it around the chamfer on the keys.
Sometimes you miss a spot and have to spot clean it. Just spray a little of the cleaner on a PT and wipe/rub.
