how to choose a new PSU (edit)

okay, I'm building a new rig (A64 3000+ , gf 6600GT, dvd-r, 80gb sata, etc.) and I have a fairly good idea about most things, but when it comes to PSU, I know nothing... I mean I know I need at least 400w, and there's a case I'm looking at which comes with PSU (420w), but I read in a couple of places that sometimes the supplied PSU is not enough. So how can I tell? What numbers should I be looking for? since obviously the 420w doesn't mean much...?

the feature most people will look at is the 12v amber rating(the kind of power that the processor and video card use).most modern psu's have >30A. I would recomment to you the fortron bluestorm at a nice value-price ratio.

For good performance/value - Fortron
For the slightly higher end enthusiast - OCZ
For the over-the-top bleeding edge enthusiast - PC P&C

That's all you need to know, really.

a bit lower ll be ok if u dont overclock too much

nice summary🙂stick to that for the time being.

ok... but regardless of the brand I'm getting, I want to know (even for general info.) what specs. should I be looking for in a decent/good PSU.

no less than 24A 12v @40c with PFC

And its Amps and Amperes. Amber was the name of my first red head, and she was a major bitch.
