How to check up a hard drive?

I have a SATA drive that used to be in a RAID 0 array, that I think failed... I am using it as a data drive now (got me a raptor) but I want to test the SATA drive to see if it's not bad or what.

I can format it without a problem, but my PC seems to lock up when I'm using it.

Thanks!

You should be able to DL a testing utility from the drive mfr's web site. Hitachi has the Drive Fitness Test disk that works with most HDs, not just Hit/IBM...
