its been a while since i had to do this and i wanted to make sure i did everything correctly. If memory serves me right, I just pop the old card out, put the new one in and then boot into safe mode (win98). then i install the drivers and i'm good to go. Is that correct?

why do you need to boot into safe mode? the purpose of safe mode is for you to remove whatever is troubling the OS, not for installing new hardware and drivers. Just pop in the new card and start up as usual, then install the drivers for the new card. Win98 will probably ask you to restart the computer, and then after that you should be all set!
