How to change XP Computer Name...

Hello,

I've just finished slipstreaming SP3 into a custom XP CD for my new laptop and it's gone well. One problem though, is the computer name.. For some reason, Windows will not accept 3-character names. It's odd because it will accept 1, 2, or 4+ character names, but the OK button grays out when you hit 3 letters. To get around this, I entered a 3-letter name during the intial Windows XP setup, but unfortunately, it appears as all lower case. A small inconvenience, but it kind of annoys me since a name is supposed to start with a capital letter lol.

So, does anyone know of a way to force XP to accept a properly typed 3-letter name for the computer name? Or do I need to dive into the registry for this, and if so, what keys am I looking for? There are a few references I can find via Google, but some have more keys than others, and I'm not sure which ones are the correct ones to change.

Thanks in advance.

Nevermind.. I feel stupid.

Perhaps Windows gets wonky if you're trying to change the name to the same exact name but with different capitalization.. I did two name changes, once to a random one, and then again back to the original one with proper capitalization and it worked.

it complains because as far as networking is concerned FILESERVER = fileserver.

lol, yes I was thinking it was something like that after a while, since I could change my PC's name to a 3-letter name without any problems.
It's why I did 2 name changes. I wonder why Windows automatically converts the name to all lower-case though instead of using it as typed during setup.
