how to change wxp key... 100% legit now...

my mom got all freaked out cause she installed the wga notifier by mistake and found out her copy of wxp was pirated.

so she went out and bought a legit license.

now, i tried a couple things but didn't manage to change her windows key... is there a surefire way to do this without actually reinstalling the whole thing???


- i tried to use microsoft's own key change tool but it found some corrupt files and won't run
- i also tried to corrupt the oobetimer regkey to make windows forget its key and then use phone activation to put it in, but that didn't work either...


there has to be a way for all these ppl that have pirated windows to go legit without actually reinstalling the entire os.... right?/

Do a repair install with the legit CD and legit key. Then, just hit windows update. Everything else will remain as-is.

she has a bunch of stuff installed like digital camera drivers + software, autocad and a bunch of other programs that would be a pain in the ass to install and configure again.... this should save me some time! 🙂

Hi, sorry I took so long to check back been out of town for a few days!

Sadly, none of the two worked for me... not sure why... I used a customized nlite XP disk to install windows so maybe some important components were missing....

the magical kellybean tool seems to be very good though!

i actually ended up doing a repair reinstall of windows using the original disk and apart from 1 or 2 programs that got messed up (PGP & Norton) everything else worked out fine!

Yep, repairs (aka inplace upgrades) work like a champ and preserve all 3rd party software.

The only reason norton and pgp got hosed is they install as services in the hklm\system hive which is the part that gets rebuilt. the hklm\software and all user registry hives remain untouched. Double check any CD burning software you may have. It often has the same issues as antivirus.


Glad you are up and running. Pretty honorable thing you (or your mom at least) did getting the legit copy and all too!

 
Quick question but any ever tried to just use Sysprep, I know ith the mini setup it wil ask you for the Key again. Might be worth a try
