OMG, why hasn't any game company or console maker thought of this. What is the excuse you always pull(ed) on your 'rents? "But maaaaa, I have to finish." Game manufacturers need to include a 'Pause State' feature in all games. This would allow a game to paused at any point, then the machine could power down. When powered back on the console would restore to that same state.

Yes this is just like hibernate or like on SNES emulators and the like... but why hasn't it been taken further? Yes this obviously can not apply to Online multiplayer games, we all know that leaving is a biatch thing to do and gamers hate it. But there are a ton of single player non online games on the market.

This would allow parents to set definitive time limits on for children to enjoy video games without leeway, so those little rugrats can get their butts outside for some friggin exercise. Also parental locks on consoles, password protect just like locking out cable channels except on the console you wouldn't be able to get past a login screen. heck, why not toss in an automatic timer function!

This doesn't affect anyone capable of responsibly enjoying games since its an optional feature. As far as exploiting it... really, if you want to cheat in a game there are ton more ways. This isn't 8-bit Lifeforce spamming pause to get the slo-mo effect, this is allowing people to stop at any point and do something else.

Anyways, I wanted to write this before i fell asleep and forgot... discuss.

Yup EyeM, save states... i dunno, i was just thinking about it. I hate not being able to leave a single player game at my convienence, its retarded that a game requires me to either finish a sequence or if the option exists to hit pause and leave the machine running. Also along the lines of parental complaints about their children playing games too much. It seems like a very simple feature to implement that many people could make use of.

Haha, but the developers feel like asses and don't want people to save a game before opening a door, jumping through and seeing whats in the door, then loading the game and then either going in the door or not (say you coulda only chose one) or having just the right weapon to blast away said monster in order to save life points/ammo.

EDIT: And you're pretty sorry parents if something like that coulda made it so much easier for you.

Save points? There are games that let you save at any time.

Also, the Sega Master System (1988 or so) had a pause button on the console. It would pause ANY game.

alas, but Punch Out doesn't have a pause, you have to wait for the end of the round. The game save revolution that happened in the N64 days really has made gaming far more convenient. I think the memory cards are largely responsible for it, since manufacturers don't have to foot the cost of being able to save.
