How to change screen resolution at the logon screen (XP and above)

I know you need to be logged on to change a screen's resolution in Windows but I recently noticed that when I resize VMware workstations, the resolution changes even if there is no one logged on. Can that be done through a script or a program.

qres + psexec and other such utilities only work when there is a console session.

I've tried it in 7 but it doesn't work there but still interesting to find out how to do it in XP
