How to change prompt in terminal?

Can you change the default prompt in a Linux terminal? (Red Hat 7) Just curious, with the hostname it is long. I liked the BSD prompt that was only the #.

You'll need to read the man page for bash for what you want to set. You'll need to set the PS1 variable. Putting it in your $HOME/.bash_profile is recommended.
