How to change file type in Windows XP?

I remember with windows 2000 and before, all you have to do is rename the extension:

Before - atot.dsd (dsd file type)

Click and then rename to atot.jpg

After - atot.jpg (jpg file, not just the name)

But in Windows XP, even if I rename the file, the file type does not change. Using the example, the file name would be atot.jpg but the file type stays as dsd. The only way to work around this that I discovered is going into DOS command and do copy command into a new file type.

Is there another way to do this? I would really appreciate it, thank you in advance.

Windows hide the file extension of known types. Goto Tools -> Options -> and uncheck Hide extensions for known file types. That should make it display the file extension and you can rename it correctly.
