Ok, somehow i got these big files can't say where, but anyhoo they should be avi but they're listed at dat files. I can open 'em using wmp but i can't change them to avi even when i add the .avi extension at the end. anyone know how i can change it so they'll be avi and not dat? thanks

You have Windows set to hide file extensions for known file types, so you've been renaming them to filename.avi.dat.

You need to show extensions for all files, then replace the .dat with .avi.

Are you sure they are not VCD (mpg) files ?

I've never heard of DAT avi files.

If they are from VCD's, then use VCDGear to convert them.

no no no...these are unfinished downloads from kazaa/morpheus. I once read (maybe here in a kazaa thread) how to repair a dat to whatever the extension should be. Try asking in your p2p chat room (#help).

Oooohh, you mean they are THOSE kind of .dat files...I've tried to recover them before, but I haven't got very far. Of ocurse, I haven't tried a whole lot, either.

Try this: Rename file to avi. Download program called "divfix" and rebuild the index of said avi file. Open in WMP. Wish like hell that it works.

🙂

Now, if you would use DC, where it actually shows the REAL file and just ADDS to it, rather than hiding it until it is finished, you wouldn't have to mess around with file extentions. 😛 😀

AVI files need the whole file to be there to work 95% of the time.

from personal experience, i've found morpheus or kazaa dat files are pretty much unrecoverable, even though going through the steps here. i think this may be because the files are incoming from multiple users at once, so it may not download in the right order, avi-wise.

Boy, you guys sure like to get into the nitty gritty of things huh?

The simplist solution was also the first reply to this post:

Badda bing it's done. Thanks for the replies though
