The easiest answer is probably a digicam.

Without an OS running, you can't run an app to capture a screenshot.

If you're talking about win95/98, there's a .dat file that is the boot screen, but I can't remember what its filename is. I think it's in the c:\windows directory. Just look through them, there's not that many I don't think. For Win2k or xp I have no idea.

arent they bmp files renamed to sys files? i think 2 are in the root directory and 1 is in the windows directory (or the other way around)

but then again i havent used win98 in a loooooooooong time so i probably forgot
