I have a secondary hard disk on my XP machine that is in the process of dying. In an attempt to recover some bad sectors and get enough life out of it to copy the data off, I scheduled a disk check to run on the next boot. Unfortunately, the drive seems to be too far gone to complete the disk check, which hangs indefinitely at 61%.
So what I'd like to do is just boot up as normal again and copy off whatever data I can get (seems most of it is still intact based on what I was getting off of it before).
Now here's the problem: when the disk check starts on boot, I have the 10 second countdown to press a key to cancel. Unfortunately (yet again), my keyboard (USB) doesn't seem to be recognized at this screen, so I have no way to cancel the check. To actually get back into Windows I had to unplug the drive. Whenever I plug it back in, Windows is intent on running that disk check that I can't cancel on the next boot.
So how do I stop this disk check? Once I'm in Windows is there a way to tell it not to run that check again? I don't see anything in scheduled tasks, so I don't know where this is stored. Or, alternatively, why doesn't my keyboard work at the cancel screen?
