how to build a router

I know this has probably been posted but i cant seem to find it...can anyone help me find a link, or tell me how to turn my old computer into a router?...thanks!
 
look for a program called winroute, the one not by tiny software but the other company

router = computer with internet connection + software
 
there are tons of tiny linux distros that fit on a floppy that are excellent..

I will try to remember some. and post back, but this might jog someone elses memory 🙂

I was thinking of FreeSCO

Here is a page with all the tiny linux distros
 
so i am have two computers with winxp on them(already networked)...i can setup this computer with win95 and it will still work?

you don't want to use winXP for a router, please dear God don't do that, if you even consider such an atrocity, please go to best Buy and just get a linksys or netgear router

Freesco is a GREAT solution, one diskette and a working 386 and you are running a router... i LOVE IT! write protect that disk and you are as safe as a small fish in a beer bottle (i'm not really that great when it comes to comparisons)...

no no no, i would use a different OS for the router....note that i said i would try win95 or linux for the router

Have you tried that, i have, one of the computers was close to unusable when the otherone was on the net...

I ended up using my old P5 - 60 for a FreeSCO router, i got a harddisk in it, but you can use a 386 with a floppy if you want to, same speed...
 
Despite the on topic nature of this OT post, I will throw my 2 cents in. There is no better OS for this type of thing and OpenBSD.

Where is the fun in that? With a little work, a lot of curiosity, and a spare throw away computer, you can have a better performing, more secure routing system. I know Microsoft doesn't tell you this Ameesh, but think outside the box for a bit. Or was that "Think Different"? 😉

I think it scares him to know that a non-ms OS can be better than the default solution (a router)... 😉

There are minimalistic Linux distros out there, able to run off a diskette and a 386 without a monitor, keyboard or mouse, these are proved solutions, would you care to explain in what way an OpenBSD solution would be better?

I'm a BSD man myself, but when it comes to this specific task, i prefer Linux...

No, I think Ameesh has come to grips with the fact that there are many different systems out there, and the one he has chosen may not be right for the rest of us. After all, he may be an employee of Microsoft, but he is not a blind fool. 🙂
