I've searched extensively for documentation on how to build a PDA. No luck. Anyone have a pointer to a book, a kit, or a web site, on how to design and build one? I'm looking to build a cheap PDA, probably Linux based.

Too many proprietary parts. Good luck finding a suitable LCD, much less the documentation on the hookup info, and then the parts needed to build the driver circuitry. Then you'll need a keypad, batteries, a charging circuit...etc.
Heck, you can't build your own laptop, and they use more standard components than a PDA would.

I don't know if it is really possible. They all contain parts that aren't sold individually. You may be able to create a crude black and white one (Do they sell little LCD screens?), but there isn't much of a point. Even if you did piece one together, you would have all sorts of problems.

Microsoft's Platform Builder lets you build your own PocketPC or other WinCE device. The only problem is that it is the size of a desktop, because that's what you use :)

Still, a big backpack with a mini-tower and a monster UPS, and you have a 40 lb. custom PDA!

Short answer: you can't.
