Hi team :)

I have one question..

what does it take to boot up a computer with NO CASE BOX ?

I have laid on the table... my working "nude" motherboard + cpu + ram + video card + diskdrive , and, a power supply dangling 1 inch away from the motherboard.

nude parts.. Aopen AX45-8xn , Intel P4 2.4ghz, 512MB DDR400, MX440

http://global.aopen.com.tw/tech/techinside/frontpanel.htm

From the above link (picture), I have jumpered the Power Switch (the torquois color) but I'm still seeing the standby LED = ON , I hear a short beep as in booting-up, and I can hear the disk spinning but no video signal (the power on the monitor flash on/off) and I have also tried my 2 other old video cards.

I think I just need help on how to ground the powersupply to the motherboard and maybe I'm missing something else with the front panel jumper ?

first make sure nothing is being shorted. Try just the mobo, cpu, one stick of ram and video card. Then short the two pwr pins w/ a screw driver or key. Oh don't forget to make sure the video card is properly inserted. (All the way in) Make sure the 4 pin 12v is connected. Make sure the 20 or 24 pin connector is in. Make sure you short the correct pins. (read the manual and make sure, there are pwr pins and reset pins) If you still don't see anything on the monitor, you need to swap parts and test which parts have gone bad.

If your motherboard is just laying bare on a table, you need to raise it up a hair or else the "spoon" on the video card will be pressing on the table which would raise the card a bit out of the AGP slot making it not work (dual layer of contacts). Plus, as openwheelformula1 stated, double check everything. ATX power, 4 pin 12v, video card power (if needed). Perhaps try clearing CMOS. Also, "I have jumpered the Power Switch," does that mean you put a jumper on it? It is supposed to be a "momentary" contact, not continuous.

Exactly. The power button connector is for a button, not a switch. Momentary contact for On or Off command, continuous contact for longer than five seconds is forced-off.

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH thank you so much guys :)

yes.. the problem was that I thought the power switch has to been jumpered closed all the time ! Thank you thank you for all your help :) Once powered-up and a beep is heard... i quickly removed the jumper and cha-ching.... BIOS screen :)

heres my thing..

i finally got my RMA box back ( i bought an ASrock939 + Opteron 148 combo ) on 12/18/05 and the mobo died 3 days later ; the turn-around time was almost 1 month.

and during the 1-month period.. i have put my old mobo+cpu (Aopen AX45-8XN + P4 2.4 ghz) back to my old PC case and have been testing 10 different Linux (HD install and also Live CD) and been loving it ! been running Streamtuner / Streamripper almost 24/7 !!

then my new replacement ASrock/Opteron came.. so i had to put my old Aopen+P4 on a desk so I can use the old box for my cpu/mobo upgrade. Been playing all my favorite games with the new build :)

but then I miss running linux so I thought of running linux off my old mobo which I will always leave ON.. this is to run Streamtuner and save all the mp3 directly to usb harddrive :)

well.. thank you very much folks !! have a great winter :)
