How to boot off of a secondary external hard drive on a laptop?

Is it even possible?

Say its either firewire or USB connected. I dont see how you could set it up in the bios to do that unless you boot off of a cd-rom with some sorta script on it

OR? Could i load VMware on my win2k box, and have the other operating system installed on the Firewire connected drive with say NT4 or linux or some other app on it?
