how to boot from mmc/sd card

The only way to pull that off would be to have the BIOS configured so that it attempts to read the MMC for a boot record. I don't know if they make any motherboards that have a BIOS like that.
 
I would imagine. You can boot from USB in the bios, probably with the intention of using a USB zip drive... so your idea should work.
