How to block Windows Update / Device Driver Installation [Windows 10]

Hey guys,

I'm having a huge amount of trouble. Yesterday at some point Windows updated something, which caused my screen to lock except for the cursor. On reboot, black screen before login, hard lock (Splashtop remote access can't find the PC).

The only way to get functionality (windows repair couldn't repair startup issues) was to boot into safe mode and restore a system restore point from the day before (when DirectX had been installed/updated).

As long as I don't connect to the internet, Windows Update will not try to update my PC and the issue won't reoccur. However, as soon as I connect to the internet, the same thing happens. Monitor flashes, locks, cursor moveable. On reboot, black screen before log-in.

Is there any way I can disable ALL updates, including device driver updates? Whatever Windows is installing (I can't figure it out) is screwing this whole thing up.

I've already defered windows update, as well as disable device driver update in advanced system settings, but it still keeps updating something.

Any help would be appreciated. Ever since updating to W10 it's just been one thing after another.

Specs:
Intel 3570k
Maximus V Gene
7970 - Crimson 15.3 hotfix (latest)
850 Evo 1 TB
16GB DDR3

Okay, update. Turns out even not connected to the internet, the same issue occured. Monitor hardlocks after a few minutes, now boot to black screen.

What the heck is going on, PC was doing just fine before yesterday, but nothing has changed outside of what W10 does in the background.

I can still boot into safe mode so it is obviously some driver screwing up my system.

To add, I think it may have something to do with the monitor driver (226bw) because when I boot into safe mode, that device has a triangle next to it, and the error is that it can't read the monitor status in safe mode. I've never seen that before in safe mode.

Edit: Just ran headless and uninstalled monitor drivers via remote access and the same issue still occured. Hard lock, then now then on restart the PC never makes it into windows. What a nightmare.

Your board doesn't have an option to disable the onboard video? Weird.

You can disable driver updates though.

Right click start button > System > Advanced System Settings on the left > Hardware tab > Device Installation Settings > select No.

I haven't had mine try to force a video driver update or anything like that on me since they fixed this on the 1511 update last November (prior to that this setting didn't work right).
