How to block kids from going adult sites??? using software

A friend of mine just bought a new computer for his son and he is very concern about adult sites. What are the ways to block kids from going web sites using software?

Does IE 5 have features to block the access to adult sites?
Any software you would recommend? (It doesn't matter whether it's freeware, shareware, or retail)

Thanks all

I suggest Norton Internet Security (Family Edition) .

It's got a firewall + Antivirus + Ads blocking + Parental Control.

It's a very good program.

And since it's a new computer, getting all those programs in a single peice of software is very cost effective.🙂

The best kind of Protection is of course Constant monitoring...
But... 2nd best would be for one of those styles of Filtering which
only allows Approved sites to go through and not just block unapproved
sites...
This is because there are Tons of new adult sites poping up everyday...

Truely, tho... My opinion is if you are concerned with such behavior,
then it's obvious the Child hasn't earned enough trust to have his
[which is Gramatically correct, not that damn P/C His/Her BS] own PC...

Personally, I'd set up monitoring... such as the history and other such
things to catch it Afterwards, and then take action to limit or take away
such freedoms...
You should atleast Trust your child at first... Until they betray that trust...

While I can't give you specific examples, I know there is net censoring software out there. Personally though, I think all that software is bogus. All too often it will censor out legitimate content. If your friend wants to monitor his son's activities, he can check his son's disk cache to see what pages he's been surfing to. If the disk cache is empty every day, it's a clear sign he's trying to hide something...or of course it may not be empty but be loaded with cached porn pages😉 Seriously though, net censoring software is just a nuisance in my opinion.

any reasonably bright kid will be able to defeat censoring software if they tried. constant monitoring is about all you can do.

How old is he? If hes 15+ let him have fun with pr0n 😉My school has a site blocking thing to and it always blocks out yahoo and altavista and other sites that have no bad content on them.

The only sure way around it is for the father to force the child to look at the porn for 48 hours straight (hold on, that sound like my usual weekends), then maybe the kid will be so sick of it, he wont want to look at it. Either that or he will become addicted and eventually take on a career in the adult entertainment industry taking on the stage name of Johhny B. Pleasureher and win several "Golden Dong" awards

Trust me, most kids figure out how to erase the History and Temporary Internet Files folders before their parents figure out how to monitor them.

If your child is younger than 16, I'd suggest not giving him his own computer. I'd get a computer and put it in a large family room or even the kitchen where the child doesn't have enough privacy to feel comfortable going to such sites. In any location, every so often, check the History and Temp. Internet Files folders to monitor his activity. Also do random searches on the computer using Start>Find>Files or Folders and entering "*.jpg" or "*.mpg" into the search field to bring up all files of those types as porn is often of such file types. Lastly, if every time you check the computer and Start>Documents is empty, then someone is probably trying to cover his tracks.

You have a right to be concerned. There is a lot out on the 'net that can screw up your kid's head for life! I've seen it happen. Through it all, remember to be a parent, not a friend. Meaning, be consistent and strict! Make sure your child knows you are in control

Good luck!

Another option is to locate the computer in the family room or kitchen area or some place where the family normally gathers and hangs out. It's hard to visit those types of sites when someone can easily look over a shoulder!!! 😉

AmdEmAll: At my school, they block a ton of sites like yahoo and stuff also, they do this for other reasons and stuff:
a) they block all free emails, so no one can send a threatening email or something and get em in trouble
b) they block places to dl all irc based stuff (icq, aim, mirc) for same reasons
c) they block all places to dl netscape and other browsers, because with ie they can make it so u cant change internet options and change the proxy, where as with netscape you would have access to that

Keeping kids from viewing porn on the net is a bunch of crap.
Who do they think puts it there?
Why would anyone who can legaly go rent a vid wait 30 minutes for 90 second mpeg to download?

hahahahah!

Trying to stop a kid in the internet generation from getting into pr0n is like trying to stop a hippie from smoking up.

When we were 18 my roommate and I started our very own pr0n website (it was actually a byproduct to make us money off of another scam, but the fact remains) and by now it's already over and done with. I've been into the pr0n since I was 15 or 16...and I'm already past that phase.

Pr0n is a normal part of life in this generation, you just ask any hippy teenager what they would have done with Mary-Jane 😉

Xe0n: At your school they use IE for security reasons? lol, IE is a shell. You can access anything from there! Next time you are using IE go to "C:\" and fire up regedit, lol.

tried it already, they deleate like everything, no regedit, you cant even get into half teh control panels (i hate that they run at 800x600 espically in classes when im using photoshop, and i cant change anything) and they use a program called pcradist taht checks the image on the server and deleates any files you added or adds any files you deleated, anyone that could tell me how to get around this i would much appreciate

Well... not to contribe to the dilinquency of a minor but, usually you have Access to the Floppy drive, they usually don't lock you out of that... So you can manipulate the Reg. to get the desired output, once you have floppy access...
But even easier than that is to write a Reg file which when merged, or run, will make the appropriate changes to the Display size and depth... this certainly wouldn't get you extreme access, but if you're good with the reg. you can get alot of control... And all these modification could easily behiden with another Reg file which reverts any changes you've made...

I doubt the File checker would check dates or sizes (it might) so the changes to the reg would go unseen...
