I took over someone's lease/rent for an apartment. He placed a 1500 deposit when he first moved in. After my lease ended, I was supposed to send him whatever deposit I receive back from the apartment complex.

For various personal reasons as well as some job related issue, I had to renew the lease another 6 months because I was not able to move. The 6 months are coming up, but unfortunately, I most likely will have to renew again for 6-8 months and this will be the final time. He is coming to my place today and wants to talk this over with the office. What is the best way to handle this situation? Anyone ever try to get the office to inspect the place and estimate the total deposit that someone would receive upon move out?

How long did he live there before you?

Unless you know something was broken needed to be repaired when you moved in I would pay back his deposit. You've changed your original agreement and your wear and tear is affecting the deposit refund.

It depends on the laws of your state. In some states, the LL is required to keep the deposit in an account in the lessee's name, so he may not be able to transfer the existing deposit to you.
