How to begin connecting TV and PC

I have looked through quite a few posts on the subject of recording TV to PC and have decided that to try and decipher it on my own would be an idiotic move a could prove to be a costly mistake. So here is my "dumb" newbie question:

I have digital cable and would like to be able to record from it to my PC. Basically, where do I start? I'm looking for Video Recording 101 here folks!

I'll begin by giving some info about my computer-
HP Pavilion f1503
Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2
Pentium 4 CPU 2.80GHz
2.80GHZ, 504 MB of RAM

You just need a capture card or a videocard with video-in and compatable software. I use an ATI eHome Wonder and Windows Media Center, but there are lots of options for you to pick from.
