How to batch process pictures just to reduce file size, mac or pc

Is there good and **easy to use** software out there that will let me save a copy of my pictures, 2-4 MB each now, down to about 100-200KB each, while leaving the file names pretty much intact? Something that should be ok for most picture sharing purposes. A batch process would be desired. I tried photoshop in MAC for this, seemed way too difficult. The pics could be converted via either Mac or Windows software, preferably freeware or adequately enabled demo /shareware.

Irfanview will do it, but I use my ancient HiJaak 5.1 and simply use the pixel option. For files under 100K, I use 800x600 pixels.

Irfan is my default viewer - but I have used HJ for so many years, it is automatic and intuitive.

No way is photoshop too difficult. In fact it really couldn't be easier.
What version of photoshop are you using?

Try File>Scripts>Image Processor

Select the folder you want to process, select where you want the folder with the smaller copies to go(it makes an new folder and uses the same file names)
Select the file format you want, (jpeg, tiff or psd) and the quality and/or size of the images you want(I'd suggest 800X600 and jpeg quality 3,4 or 5). You can even run actions on them as they are processed and add copyright info. All auto.

Photoshop is a powerful program, it takes some learning.

Thanx for the replies 🙂 People on this site are uber great to newbies

I will try the suggestions posted.

I am adept at messing about inside the computer case. I can easily replace a hard drive in the old white ibooks - not an easy task. But when it comes to software, please find me a kid - he will figure it out before I do. I am not adept at photoshop - mac version 7. I have never had any formal training in it. I have had moderate success at using it for "complicated" things, like my post Katrina Holiday cards. But it took hours even for me to do the cards. I do not have, nor have I ever used photoshop in windows. I work in a university hospital, but forget about buying anything new. I do have some software that came with canon (2005) and nikon (2003) digital cameras. That might work in both mac and pc, but never figured out how to batch process images.

My next step will be finding webhosting for my post Katrina pictures. I worked the storm for the first 9 days. I have seen tons of reccs for webhosting.
