how to backup email messages?

I want to save all the email that i've received in the past and put it back onto my computer after reformatting it. I'm saving everything i can onto my external, such as the my documents folder and random other stuff. How would I go about backing up my email, because I can't find an option to do it with thunderbird?

Thanks, I finally found it, I kept looking under the Mozilla folder for it, but Thunderbird has its own folder under Application Settings.
