How to ask for vacation time: Job question: seeking advice

Ok here goes I'll give you just the facts. I have just accepted a job offer (on friday). On friday AM they said "we would like to offer you xxx salary (hourly position)" Upon accepting i asked for 2 things. This coming week off (i told them that i had scheduled a few appointments for the coming week and we were discussing my start time after I had made those appointments. I offered to move the appointments to the begining of the week and start wed, but they said "no go ahead you can start mon nov 10th thats fine" another thing i asked for was the friday after thanksgiving off, because i already have airplane tickets to visit my family in NJ for the weekend)

Now here's the catch. After i returned home my girlfriend reminded me that she has 3 weeks off for christmas (from med school) and wants to do a road trip to NJ and MA for 3 weeks surrounding christmas and NYE. I stupidly had not thought of this ahead of time and could have negotiated for this but did not. So now i need to decided how to approach them.

A few other factors: During the interview i inquired about "time off" (unpaid vacation or personal time) they said that it was fine and flexible that i could take time off if needed for personal or vacation and they would have no problem with it.

So now it is sunday night, tomorrow i start my "week off" and then I begin working for this new company. I already have a good relationship with my boss because I earned the job by working very hard for a (co-worker) of his that reccomended me. So they actually bid for me in this job offer. I am not worried that asking for this time will change their opinion of me because they already know first hand that they want me on their team (IT desktop support).

Should I,

A) Call tomorrow and explain that i would like to take 8days off around christmas time and ask If in exchange for that they would like me to start this week, say tuesday? (I would make it clear that I still intend to take the position regardless of their response to this request) I don't really want to "re-negotiate" (if even possible) but my gf thinks I could use that aspect of it to my advantage, cause i havent signed a contract yet, nor have i began working.

B) Leave well enough alone, show up for work on the 10th and approach my boss in person and discuss it over lunch... etc.

I would let them know ASAP because around the holidays others will also be asking for time off. I would say take a week and be happy with that. You are just starting here and first impressions say a lot about a person.

Agreed. There's nothing my boss hates worse than me giving her a heads up that I need tomorrow off.

The more advance notice you can give, the better. Do it immediately and in writing (if possible).

bump? Looking for responses from the morning crew.

p.s I am going to ask for 8 days off so that i can spend 2 weeks up north for both holidays

I don't really think it is a good idea to ask for so much time off. I think the other people on the job will think, "What! This new kid comes in and thinks he gets to take off so many days and he hasn't worked here but a few days?! What is he, special?" -- Just my opinion dude, I think you don't want to get off to a bad start with your fellow employees...8 days is quite a bit of time when you haven't even been on the job for 2 months.

I'd be unhappy if a new employee asked me for 8 days off after just starting the job, no matter how much I wanted them.

But in any case, I think the way to do it is to ask your boss personally.

"Are we very busy around the Christmas/New Year holidays? I had plans to do some traveling in those two weeks and would like to take unpaid time off if possible. But I realize that I have just started and don't want to get off on the wrong foot. I was just hoping that it might not causing any difficulty. If it's a problem, I'll change my plans now."

Even if the boss says OK, your co-workers might not be too thrilled because they might not know it's unpaid time.
