How to apply thermal compoud onto cpu?

I have the XP1600 and the Arctic Cooling for the Super Silent Pro TC.

Since I've never applied the thermal compound I was wondering if someone could give me some specific directions.

Man, after reading through those directions I'm gettin kinda nervous now...

Is that what everyone does?

 
I feel its the only safe way......just remember, DO NOT use your bare finger to apply or smooth the compound (skin cells, and oils will be applied onto the the processor if you do. <------------------------------not a good thing. try using something like clear plastic wrap, it is easier to put around your finger and you have a bit more control. Have Fun!!!!😉
 
Put a little bit on I'd say about the size of the number " 0 " on your keypad. Remember you only want a very small paper-thin amount(if you can only see grey you probably have too much) because the as3 itself is not supposed to conduct heat but fill in the microgaps between the CPU core and the heatsink. In that respect smudge some on the heatsink as well where the core will contact with it. Then wipe it off with a lint-free tissue. (Like lotion to your skin)
 
So I'm just looking to put a very thin layer on the slug, and shave most of it off with a credit card?

What's good to use for "lint-free" tissue?

 
Spread it over the core with the card or whatever you use. And toilet tissue will do.
If its too little just put some more on and repeat.

Don't worry this isn't hard at all. It will be over in 2 minutes.
 
I just use a toothpick to spread the compound and haven't worried too much about thickness, figuring that the pressure between the heatsink and chip would push any extra compound to the side. Is it really a problem to apply too much compound?

Yea because then the compound blocks the heat transfer.
