How to allow better cooling on your SLK800. Easy and simple.

I know this has been done already but just wanted to share how simple it is with this common cooling setup.

1.) Old 80x25mm fan, gut the fan out and clip the extra pieces to allow good airflow.

2.) Move the bars on the HS to the 2nd from top position.

3.) Place 80x25mm frame on HS then place Tornado 80x38mm on top of the frame.

4.) Use a tad bit of force and get the bars to sit on top the closest Tornados screw holes that then will pin the frame down between the two.

Cooled mine down a 2c with the same RPM. Simple and fast, 5mins.

So you stacked two fans on the SLK800, the gutted 80MM on the bottom and the Tornado on top? How about the noise? Nice mod.

Another cheap cooling tip that I use for my HD is to add an 80mm fan in the lower bay of my HD cage. It's stuck in there with double sided tape and blows cool air from the Intake fan straight up on the HD. Makes a great $5 cooler.

I'm not doubting that it works. But why does that make it run cooler?

Got any pics? I'd like to see this.

Probably because the center of the heatsink does not get proper airflow because that's where the fan's motor is... having some sort of duct before the air hits the heatsink may promote more air to hit the center which is where the core of your CPU sits... the idea is sorta like Thermaltake's Ducting Mod... :D but don't quote me on that... i'm just someone pretending to know what the hell he's writing. :)

It lets the turbulence dissipate in the short duct, and promotes flow thru the center of the sink. It's also a good way to help quiet noisy case intake fans, putting the spacer between the fan and case reduces turbulence...

I would love to take a picture, but how do I post them? Its so damn easy and it really helped, I was reading about dead spots of fans, when you have them too close to the source the fan cannot move air properly but with it raised by a 80x25mm bracket it allows for better airflow onto the HS, it really did drop the temps by 2c, and I hardly have my Tornado running(3700rpm), I have a 1800+TB(1530) OC at 1957(1.85v) , great idea I read about, just wanted to show how little of work it takes to do this , since alot of you have the SLK800, just move the clips put a 80x25mm in the middle of the HS and Tornado and bam , better cooling at the same DB.

How do I post pics, sorry , never have done it, I will post asap once I get a answer.

You need to find somewhere to host the pics (do not really know any good places as I always use the webspace for my site :p) and then link to them. AT does not support pictures in posts.

Nice that the little duct-mod helped your temps. Will definitely keep it in mind if I decide to get one of those hs's for a future computer.

Here's how it came out on my computer. Didn't help temps much but did quiet the fan down some.

PS. Please note the leet voltage mod to my 8rda+ and my leet rubber banding of a fan to the zalman on my northbridge =P

I took 3 really good pictures that will allow you all to see what I am talking about, LyNx01 said he would post them.

This mod works on the AX-7 or SLK800 with 80x25mm fans as well. I haven't tried on a SK7 but my bud wants me to try it on his so I will let you know what is needed for it. Its just a matter of either connecting 2 fans together than attaching it to heatsink or just resting both fans ontop and using clips to secure both. Now if you have a extra 80mm laying around you don't want, I would so recommend this, I have a 1.53ghz XP1800+TB that is running at 1995mhz@1.92v/34c right now at 24c case temps.

if you don't have another fan laying around, pringles potato chips tubes are about the same diameter as a fan.

I gave up on try to quiet my fans, I'm going h2o

I hollowed out a fan tonight, and strapped them together, but I didn't like how the clips sat so I didn't boot it up like that. The 2-4 degrees wasn't worth the chance of the clips coming loose.

Yeah there are some 13 total fans in there. Yes Is very loud if I turn up all the fans to full on the Rheobus, but in my comfort range when I turn it down. Super good OverClockablity

5 - SmartCase2 80x25mm (2 Exhaust/3 Intake) Controlled by a Rheobus
1 - Tornado 80x38mm (CPU) Controlled by a Rheobus
2 - LED 80x25mm (video card direct ) Low RPM
2 - Power Supply
2 - Video Card
1 - Vantec Chipset Cooler

Also anyone will a case similar to this that has them Hard Drive cages that snap into the case, check this out. Considering you have a 80mm fan inside the cage bracket put your fingers behind the cage to feel the airflow, now unlatch the cage and move it out 1/2 inch, feel the huge air flow improvement. As long as you do not move your case around I would recommend leaving it that way, you can leave your fan on a lower setting this way with the same airflow.

1.) Unlatch Hard Drive cage and pull back 1/2 inch to allow better airflow.

2.) Before you move or pick up your case, latch it back in.

JPEG's man! That first file was nearly a megabyte; a JPEG would be under 60KB. Save it with Internet Explorer (right click on file and Save As Picture), Paintbrush, or a photo editor. Just a tip.:)

I wonder if there'll ever be 80mm TMD fans. Still don't know why they chose 70mm - seems like it's not a standard size for a computer fan.

I just may have to try this one. As I posted in another topic, I bought one of those ducting mods without thinking. Of course it didn't fit on my slk-800 or sk7 (wife's computer). Fortunately I have the tornado 7 on my server though I wouldn't have spent the money on modding that computer since it just sits in the closet and doesn't really need the extra cooling.

Tried this on my AX7....didn't do anything....temps stayed exactly the same.

30cfm fan
-----
Hollowed out NMB
-----
AX7

BUT...my AXT has a solid aluminum center, right where the dead spot on th fan is, so it doesn't really make a difference whether air blows right in the middle of the sink anyway...at least, thats what my guess is ;) And I 'aint bendin' the clips on my SK7 for 2*C :D

Is it possible to do this mod with two YS-Tech, standard size 80mm fans? Do they have to be different CFM ratings?

the idea is not to use two fans, the idea is to use one fan (on top) then a fan where you cut out the guts (usually three or four plastic legs from the frame to the motor).

Sort of like a carburator / throttle body spacer on a car....I am doing this mod, simple solution to the dead spot in the center of the fan, which also is right over the cpu core...

Yes, exactly. The gutted fan goes between the regular fan and the heatsink.
