How to activate EIST & pentium 4 3.0(630) overheat

Does anybody know how to activate EIST (Enhanced Intel SpeedStep Technology)?
my OS is windows XP SP2, processor P4 3.0 630 series (2M cache,800fsb) on a intel board 915GAV.
i've been update my BIOS with latest version
i have read in intel website how activate EIST and try it but it doesn't work,
my processor and board should be support this technology
and i still confuse with my processor temperature

At rest Intel hardware monitor reports the following:
Processor Zone: 57-59 C
System Zone 1: 46-48 C
System Zone 2: 46-48 C

When I start loading the CPU with applications(such as my java application) or games the numbers instantly goes up to:
Processor Zone: 65-68 c (sometimes 69-70C)
System Zone 1: 49-52 C
System Zone 2: 49-52 C

it is possible that intel hardware monitor make a mistake? what should i do?

has anybody have same spec like me (board & processor), how is the temperature ?
any solution for my problem ?

thank u

Keep in mind the 630, although it does support EIST, will only clock down to 2.8GHz even at "Maximum" setting. So basically you're wasting your time with EIST and the 630.

yes i use the stock heasink
is it normal temperature when i use stock heatsink?
about EIST why when i have done step active EIST like in intel website( http://www.intel.com/cd/channel/reselle...k_p4/technical_reference/203838.htm)it seems does't work, is there any others step?
i just want to know the effect when i use EIST

temperature of this processor changes very quick for example when i run my java application the temperature increase to 66-68c from 58-60C when i finish run my application it became 58-61 C, is it possible the temperature change 9-10 C in just a 3-4 second?
is it possible hardware monitor make a mistake?

and for cpu cooling my friend offer me a thermaltake big typhoon or silent tower, is it good enough?

Hello Sanji,

Did you manage to enable speedstep?

I'm running into the same problem: Pentium 4 630, enabled EIST on my Intel 915GEV board, Windows XP SP2, power management on portable/laptop setting, but speedstep doesn't seem to work. (Reported frequency 3000.)

Two possibilities:
- Speedstep does work, but Windows, and CPU-Z do not report the processor throttling down to 2800
- Speedstep does not work.

Intel support is working on it, but after three weeks, they still don't have an answer.

Cheers,
Igor.

Speed step does not work on 630's b/c Speed step will drop the computer to 2.8ghz at idle but since your systems max is 2.8ghz, it can't get any slower. IMHO - replace the stock hsf and you'll notice a nice drop in temps.

My Intel 640 paired w/ a XP-120 idled in the mid-thirties and at load maxed at 46-48c.

Try using throttlewatch. If you load your CPU and it starts to throttle when you hit 68-70 then your temps are accurate. I think you have a problem with airflow, since your case temperature is insanely high as well.

Max speed on Pentium 630 is 3000ghz, not 2800ghz. Speedstep should work, according to Intel specs. The Intel processor identification utility indicates that my processor (630) supports EIST (enhanced speedstep).

Have been on the phone with intel support a few times. They are still at a loss to explain the problem.

Speedstep works (and/or the speed is reported correctly by Windows) with the latest BIOS for the 915GEV (and similar) boards: bios version 0469. With version 0444, speedstep does not work, or the speed is not reported correctly by Windows.
