How to access my docs folder of another user?

I had reinstalled windows to get up and running, but now access is denied to my old folder. I kept all my Mp3s and personal files in the old my documents folder.

I cant do a thing with it now, I cant copy, rename, even read from it. Access is just denied. It was password protected, and afaik, not encrypted, but it was made using XP Pro, and I'm on XP home now.

Any way I can get to it? I can't lose my documents.

Did you set the permissions using NTFS?

XP Home does not use NTFS, I don't know how that would affect it's ability to read the folder...

It might just ignore them.

if memory serves, under the covers, windows handles users not by login name but by a weird text string (in the same manner that *nix REALLY uses userid numbers). These ID are randomly(?) generated. So when you set the permissions, this ID was used along with the human-readable username.

So.... even though in the previous install, MYLOGIN stood for $4!(@*&!&*@()*!&@*()&!, MYLOGIN might be $5!*(@&^#!&(@# this time around. Since the 'salted' names don't match, windows assumes you do not have permission.

Solution: Add your current account to the share listings. You may delete the old one. It's useless now.

So any and everything in the old account is basically gone? I know its all still there, its taking up disk space, and the defragmenter finds fragmented files in it, by filename.

I refuse to believe that there is absolutely no way to recover it. Its not even damaged!

From the first post, I understood that you were trying to get at a folder that did not belong to your CURRENT account.

I'm not sure how XP Home implements its user data permissions, but you should be able to get to anything with the Administrator account, no?
