How to access bios with bad PS2 port?

I've got an ECS K7S5A motherboard that gave me crap earlier today. I had to reset the cmos so it would post. Well now it posts but prompts me to press F1 to run setup or F2 to load defaults to continue. Here is the problem... The PS/2 port doesn't work for the keyboard.... I have a USB keyboard that won't work in the bios menu.... I have a USB->PS2 adaptor going to a PS2->Serial adaptor, have them hooked up to the keyboard, that doesn't work either. How the hell am I supposed to press F1 or F2!?!?!

Try another USB keyboard? TBH, that sounds like an excuse to upgrade to me :).

Hm....if I jumper the bios on my K7S5A pro my USB keyboard works for by default. YOu don't even have to enable it in bios. Maybe older revisions suck, I don't know.

it's not the pro series, it's ver 3.1 i think

what do you mean by jumper the bios?

the lights come on the keyboard (num lock, scroll lock, caps lock) but they all stay solid.... :(

i've tried different keyboards all with no luck :(

what can i "upgrade" to? i just have a xp 2100+ with 512 pc2100 ddr ram *shrugs* don't think i need much of an upgrade for that...

Not true. On my old Asus board you had to turn on Legacy USB support for a USB keyboard to work in the BIOS. Of course he can't do that now though.

I took a peek at the manual ok ECS's site and I didn't see anything about a jumper to use a USB keyboard. There was one for Keyboard Power On Selector. That one may need to be enabled for a USB keyboard to work. The jumper is JP1 next to the ATX power connector. Pins 1-2 are disable and pins 2-3 are enable. You should be able to find more info in your manual to your board.

Maybe he meant clear the cmos then see if usb keyboard works. If bios is removable. Put it in working board change settings then put back in yours.

tried that jumper, didn't change anything :( don't have another motherboard to swap bios chips with but even if i did wouldn't it just be back to default setting since it wouldn't have any power to hold the settings *shrugs*

no other suggestions eh? :(

What that one person meant was to jumper the Clear CMOS jumper for say 30 seconds and then put the jumper back and see if the USB Keyboard then works. I have a K7S5a origional and think that default is OFF for Legacy USB support which means clearing the CMOS would not help. Are you sure the PS2 port is dead? My K7S5a did that once and all I did was pull the PS2 Keyboard plug and put it back in and out a a few times and it came alive and has worked ever since. Try that before you give up. If you can't get a Keyboard to work I don't see a way to get into the Bios. I will check my board on my old Duron backup system and see what the defaults are and get back to you.

With the PS2 port are you using a Real PS2 keyboard or one with an USB to PS2 adapter? Some adapters get flakey with time.

used several real ps2 keyboards and several usb keyboards.. none worked... left the cmos battery out for a good hour and whatnot.. nothing changed :(

i know the ps/2 port is fried cuz my keyboard started smoking and the entire pc shut down.... when unplugged the computer booted fine but the ps2 port never worked since

opps! You should have said that at first. Wonder what went wrong? Keyboard or port that caused it to smoke.

I checked my Bios, By default the Legacy USB is off. I see no way to turn it on unless you could use the PS2 port. If you flashed the Bios it would still use default settings and Default is off.

If you don't want to spend a lot but fix the problem how about another K7S5a? NewEgg has them under $50 last time I looked. There is also a newer ECS board that is very low in price too that will take your CPU or better yet spend just a bit more and get a board with an NForce2 chipset. Very good boards for the Athlon.

Sorry I could not do more to help.
