How to accept credit card payments online?

If I were to start an online store how would I go about accepting credit card payments? Can someone point me in the right direction to get information with the answer or try and explain this to me? Im not talking about going through paypal because everyone doesnt have paypal and wouldnt want to sign up for it. I would need to accept credit cards such as Mastercard, Visa, Discover, etc. I know there are companys that offer these services, can anyone recommend one or at least help me get the idea of how it works? Thanks

you need a secure server. check a hosting company, and they should have a plan to set it up. you need a merchant account, which your hosting company could help with. i forgot the links for the info though.....sorry....
