How tight is airport security these days? (Eagle Scout Medal acceptable?)

I haven't flown since September 15th, 2001 or so (I was stuck in Germany following 9/11) and in November I am traveling down to Texas for my cousin's Court of Honor, where he will be awarded his Eagle Scout rank. As an Eagle Scout myself (once and always, right?) I'm going to be inducting him and I am wondering if my Eagle medal will cause any problem at the metal detector. It looks like this. I ask because I remember hearing a story about a vet getting his Congressional Medal of Honor confiscated by security and he had to mail it home. I'm planning to just carry on, so checking isn't an option.

Its a 50/50 shot really. When I left military service I was in germany, and on our flight back to the US, I had all my medals in my carry on bag, which they told me I needed to put them in my checked bags. It was inconvienent yes, but they didn't take them away. If you don't want to check them, id say just go early and ask someone there, and if you have to put them in your checked bags...oh well. But its better than them taking your medal away.

your going to have to check it, the security in airports is a little on the rediculous side nowadays, went to san Francisco a couple of weeks ago and the metal lace rings on my shoes set off the metal detector, i got detained for 10 minutes while they went over me with a wand, and then X-Rayed my shoes.
And from another Eagle Scout, tell your Cuz congrats :)

You'll have to check it. You could hijack a plane with those pointy wings! Welcome to the Soviet States of America.

Thanks for the info. I think maybe I'll give the airport a call ahead of time and see what they have to say.

Mail the medal to your brother's house next week, don't worry about dealing with airport security.

The question is why don't you just check it in? Why do you have to carry it?

Its funny, i have flown several times to and from san diego this year. With my bag of electronic goodies and wires out the wazoo and full bathroom kit, i walked straight through security without even having to turn the laptop on. Being 22 and male, i consider that pretty lax security. Now, if you are going to fly with anyone who looks like a normal citizen with out any electronic goodies, be prepared to wait. Oh and dont carry safety scissors or anything like that. Dont make any comments or look at any security officers, you will be arrested. Dont even breathe the same air.

I did have to put my sandwich through the detector. That was kind of cool.

I am hesitant to mail it. It is very important to me and I wouldn't want to risk it. Of course the risk of losing it in a checked bag is probably greater.
