The difference is that everyone today is afraid. Afraid of accidents, afraid of their food, afraid of disease, afraid of terrorists, afraid of the government, afraid of corporations, afraid of criminals, afraid of the police. We've become a country of whining pussies, afraid of our own fucking shadows.

You got that right. Politicians, press, just about anyone who can benefit or profit can and will play up on fear. Ride around in the back of a pickup? Yep, done that. Even better I was a kid when we had real firecrackers. I don't mean pop pop pop. Every 4th we'd buy the good "black cats". We'd light one and drop it in an upturned empty veggie can and then an Campbell soup can into larger can but open side down. The smaller can sailed up to the top of the trees. Now? Wouldn't fly a foot.

"That's dangerous"! Hmm... I'm sure that you can find accident after accident but at some point some people decided to go on a mission to protect us and they did that by projecting fear and we've just assumed that as part of our natural culture. Don't even get me started about the gun fearmongers.

We used to have water gun wars in the 80's with these:

AK-Centerfire-Entertech.jpg

AUCTIONS-6-22-03-015.jpg

We even took them to school. Yet they were only confiscated, and no one was arrested, tazed or shot.

It was a different time.

Lol, I had that top water gun and a couple of other military-looking water guns too.

80s>>>>>>>>>>>>all others.

-smoking cigarettes openly in restaurants, offices, and anywhere. didn't matter if kids were inhaling 2nd hand smoke

Hell my HS had a smoking area for Teachers and Students.....1988

I did know two people with peanut allergies though.

I was born in '88, but my favorite cartoons as a kid were all from the 60s and 70s. Basically all Hanna-Barbera shows like Johnny Quest, Superfriends, Fantastic Four, Space Ghost, The Flinstones and Jetsons, and Scooby Doo Where Are You?

-kids sat in front without seat belts
Seat belts were requirements in new cars in some areas as early as the 1960s, and in most areas in the 80s.

-no gluten allergies to worry about
I believe celiac disease was first diagnosed in the 1920s, but the proven link to wheat products was in the 50s or earlier, with actual diagnostic tests in the 60s.

By the 80s it was a very well-established disease in medical circles.

However, back then it was not a fad disease like it is now. Now everyone thinks they have gluten sensitivity when probably the majority of those who think they do, don't.

-or peanut allergies
Peanut allergies have been around and known about for just about forever.

In fact, the EpiPen became available to the general public in the 80s.

The whole peanut allergy thing didn't start coming in until I was in middle school. Maybe grade 7 or 8. There was a "peanut free zone" in the far corner of the lunch room. That was before they started punishing everyone else because a few kids were allergic. I didn't know anybody who had peanut allergies.

Early 90s were still a good few years to grow up. Great cartoons, console wars, kids still played outside and their parents didn't hover over them. Kids today have a lot of the fun stuff robbed from them. Almost never see the ones on my neighbourhood playing outside. Parents will drive a couple blocks to pick them up from school for Christ sakes.

I was on a flight a 3 or 4 years ago and they were passing out peanuts as the free snack and were selling peanut M&Ms as part of their snack assortment. At one point, a flight attendant came on the PA and said:

"Everyone, we're going to ask you not to eat your peanuts or peanut M&Ms. We have a person on the flight who is very allergic to them."

WTF?!?!? I opened mine and ate them anyway and I suspect the rest of the plane did too. If you're that fucking allergic, wear a mask or better yet, don't go where you know they serve them and inconvenience an ENTIRE PLANE OF PEOPLE just for yourself.

I think its important to note that wheat allergy, celiacs, and gluten sensitivity are all different things.

True, but I'd guess that the vast majority of people who think they are "gluten sensitive" really aren't. It's a fad disease these days.

Here are the things I remember:

-No such thing as "No shoes, no shirt, no service."
-People used to walk around the lakes, in bikinis and such no less. And they weren't fat.
-People used to have pick up games. A bunch of kids in the neighborhood would just get together and play baseball/football, whatever. Never once did it turn into a gunfight.
-Used to scavenge through the golf course garbage cans a few blocks away for aluminum soda cans to recycle at the store (no such thing as recycling at the home, you'd get paid to bring the stuff back to the store to recycle and they'd pay you), so we could earn 0.25c to buy a can of soda ourselves. Now we pay to have recycling. :)
-Companies used to send you a remit for the bill with a stamp on the return envelope already so you could just write a check and mail it in. No need to worry about buying stamps.
-My dad used to go to certain stores that had products "made in the USA". (It was his objective to frequent these stores to support America) LOL these days.

We had that in the 80s IIRC.

EDIT:

I just looked this up. Apparently these signs started showing up in the 1970s.

We have that in our neighbourhood today. Street hockey though.

Yeah, that's fine, but it's easier to pay online.

i'm a 70s kid stuck in the 80s. i've been thinking lately about how we did things better and differently back then. here are some of those things that would cause outrage today. feel free to list your own. those born after 1998 need not apply.

-playing cops and robbers without the orange tip true. but who cares?
-riding bikes without worrying about pedos Kids still can do this. it's not like we have more pedos now
-no airbags in cars And I'm glad we have them.
-kids sat in front without seat belts what? fuck you are a idiot.
-no gluten allergies to worry about ok..
-or peanut allergies same as above.
-drawing pictures of guns kids still do that..
-smoking cigarettes openly in restaurants, offices, and anywhere. didn't matter if kids were inhaling 2nd hand smoke woot and glad they don't
-no HFCS this one i agree with. wish we didn't have it

*sigh* i'm reminiscing again. can the japanese hurry up and build a time machine already? :(

my responses in bold. most of this stuff is fucking silly to talk about.

Cartoons, cartoons CARTOONS!

The shit that they have now is utter CRAP!

Ghostbusters, G.I Joe, Thundercats. Then Nickelodeon was awesome! David The Gnome, Little Bits, Eureeka's castle, You can't Say That on Television, Rocko's modern life. God I sure miss those times. Fuck Pikachu.

the only thing great about the 80's were the cartoons. fuck early morning before school and Saturday mornings were great.
