All I can say is damn! They rock, how is it that I've been listening to music for all these years and never heard them? If you even remotely like punk you should give them a listen.

that is a good question. they are pretty much one of those de facto old school punk bands. Jello Biafra is kinda a synonymous name w/punk :0

What kills me even more about this is I'm always looking for less mainstream bands to listen to. I had heard of them but never actually listened TO them. I highly recommend

Because you've been living under a rock? That's really the only excuse.

Check out XM radio channel 53. They play all the "good alternative/punk" from the 80s. Dead Kennedys are a staple mix.

Don't forget to pack a wife!!!

Couldnt tell you. I started listening to DK in ~87. Never really got into them much though. Plus, Jello turned into an ass for scene in the late 80s.

Try (If you haven't already):
Buzzcocks
Screeching Weasel
Propaghandi
Misfits
The Bollweevils
Naked Raygun
Cap'n Jazz (different stuff but so good)

Also buy everything the Minutemen have ever recorded, because you should. They're great.

Wow, youre both way off. DK is not even the same vein as those bands. Just because its old does not mean its the same genre. The only band that i would recommend if OPie has a hardon for DK is the Crucifucks.

Ah... the elitist "I was there man" guy has arrived.
I listened to all these bands and liked them with a similar passion when I was a teenager. I never implied they were the same. They're all, along with DK, great bands.
Good job bringing another music thread down to the "your opinion is wrong" level.

Eh? Gibsons list is not far off at all. I would recommend all of those bands to anyone who had just started with DK.

As for djheater's list, the only one I would not recommend is the last one, because I don't know it. How many bands sound exactly like DK? Well none, so I'm not really sure what your point is.

@djheater: do The Bollweevils still make music? I remember seeing them play here probably 10 years or so ago, but never heard anything from them after that.

meh, I was there and the bands you listed along with Gibsons were all the same genre so I don't know where he's coming from.

Just because metallica and slayer don't sound the same doesn't mean they weren't the part/start of different music.

-edit-
Just for old times....

Wow. I haven't seen Capnjazz mentioned here... ever, I think. Definitely different, but catchy in an odd way. Last.fm has a bunch of their stuff in full if you want to listen. Also, their cover of Take On Me is better than the original.

Propaghandi were (are?) decent. I think I lost interest in them after John K. Samson left for The Weakerthans (entirely different, but good stuff).

Rancid's a good band to throw in there too. Even their commercially viable albums, especially And Out Come the Wolves, are excellent. Ironic considering the band was basically formed to keep Tim Armstrong alive following Op Ivy, but hey, it worked.

Heard them play in a small venue (think it was the Benton County fairgrounds in Corvallis OR) in about 1984 or 1985. Great concert. :) Saw Black Flag at the same place around the same era. Fun times. Went home from both concerts black and blue from dancing the whole time. Heh. Saw the Ramones at the EMU ballroom (University of Oregon) in '85 as well. Still have some hearing loss in my left ear as a result of that concert.

(end of random babbling)

What you'll notice about my list is the Chicago connection... Cap'n Jazz, BollWeevils (who disbanded long ago, but a couple of members have current side projects), Weasel and Raygun, are all Chicago acts, and I spent my youth traipsing from show to show in a drunken or drug-addled haze, for better or worse.

Tim Kinsella did some other projects but none were as great as Cap'n Jazz IMO (and I'm probably wrong). Steve Albini is the king of Chicago punk as far as I'm concerned because he's still going, he's a machine.

Hmm, I've never heard of any of their bands. And I do listen to a lot of non-radio stuff, though almost all of it contemporary (I hate stuff even I listened to 10 years go, normally). goes to show how many freaking groups there are.

Hell dude, they've actually become has beens... long ago. I'm into punk, but there is better, even in the realms of the washed up.

Try Propagandhi.
