How the hell does firmware get fried?

For some reason, my combo unit stopped photocopying. Worked fine as a printer.
I took it in for repair and it works now.

Repair description was: reflash firmware, test and adjust. Cost me $55.00

How the hell does FIRMWARE gets fried?

Static electricity shorting something out? Idunno. I haven't honestly thought about it much.

It's happened to me before.... except replace "combo unit" with "industrial color photocopying machine with network connectivity" and replace "worked fine as a printer" with "did nothing but sit there with a fault screen flashing on its monitor". 😀 😀 😀

"Reflash firmware" might refer to a firmware upgrade they performed for you...

This is most likely.
However, we have an Epson colour laser that has "firmware issues", and now refuses to do anything except yell for a service engineer.

Skip.contents = skip.contents + 1.

I had the same problem with a printer at work once, and it worked after they reflashed it. Basically they upgraded the firmware as mentioned by gsaldivar.

As for firmware get fried. Static electricity can to that as mentioned by GeekDrew, and a brownout definately can fried your firmware as well.
