I got a motherboard/CPU combo from monarch and I can't get the heatsink/fan off, dammit.

I have a Neo2 and A64 3500+ Winchester

I didn't tell them to put on any thermal paste or anything, but it seems like there is some on there, I can wiggle the heatsink around, but I just can't get it off.

I removed the screws and unhooked everything. What the F**K do I do?

There should be a metal hook type thing that clips onto a platic tab just remove em. ( I am just going by when I installed my 3500)

Just so you know, if you put AS on that CPU, monarch voids the warranty.

Anyway, you need to heat that CPU up w/ some heavy load programs like Prime. Do that for a few hours. Shut off system, start twisting the heatsink left to right in circular motion, continue doing it until the heatsink comes loose from the CPU. If 1st you don't success, do Prime again. DO NOT pull the heatsink from the CPU, you might snap the whole CPU out from the socket and break some pins.

It's that fricking paste on there isn't it? I need to heat that up?

It's ok not to put any thermal paste on there, correct?

And yes, you need paste between the CPU and heatsink. If you don't care about Monarch's warranty by all means, take the retail HSF off and put something else on there. Remember you need thermal paste.

I'm transferring my CPU over to a new motherboard, if there is still some paste on the CPU, can I use that?

No, if you take off the heatsink, you need to clean off, and apply a fresh coat of themal paste.

No, you can not reuse the old paste.

You need to clean off the CPU completely. Also, you do not need to heat the CPU for a few hours. 10-20 minutes will do.

If you do not re-apply any TIM, you will fry the CPU.

One other thing. Don't rip the HSF fron the MB. There is a good chance the CPU will come with it, and bend the pins.

No, using a different paste DOES NOT void your warranty.
It's true that Monarch may void your warranty for using Arctic Silver (They voided mine, but then said they were changing that policy), but non metallic based thermal compunds are fine. AMD does not void the warranty for use of any particular type of paste.

As for removing the HSF, just do it with the CPU still warm. I tried to remove mine when the system had been off overnight, and I did pull the CPU out of its socket, but I luckily didn't break any pins. There are several posts on here where others have done the same thing and some have actually broke some pins. Just be careful and it will come off without any problems.

I don't have any thermal paste, well, actually I might. I got some paste that came with my GeForce Ti 4600 GPU cooler that I'm selling in my sig, could I use the paste that came with that?

Also with my old P4 2.8 I reused the old paste that was already on there, it worked perfectly. At least I think there was paste on there...kinda hard to tell.

Oh and how do I get Prime95 to run test or whatever it does?

EDIT: , nevermind, I just figured it out. CPU temps at 53C

why not just take a hair dryer to the thing instead of using prime95? wouldnt it be less time consuming?

i'd try the hair dryer first, this way you wont risk frying your CPU with prime95 if you botched the HSF some how while trying to remove it.

I remember that next time, but with my computer running, I can monitor temperatures, I can't with a har dryer. Well it's probably hot enough now, so I'll try to remove it.

Temperature of the CPU, no. :D

Would I put the hair dryer directly over the heatsink, and just keep trying to get it off while it's heating up?

This is a ridicules idea.

Exactly how is Prime95 going to fry the CPU while removing the HSF? You're supposed to have the computer off while you remove the HSF! :Q

they come with a thermal pad, and yes, a pad or paste is required. No only would that viod your warranty (not using one or the other) it will damage your cpu.

So when Monarch put my combo together, they must have used a thermal pad, which is making it really hard to get this sucker off. I ordered the retail heatsink/fan.

Do I need to remove the thermal pad and put on a new ono or new thermal paste when I transfer the CPU and heatsink over to my new mobo?
