My CPU seems to have become unseated, but i cant get the fan/heatsink off for the life of me. Is there some trick? I flipped the two bars up but it wont come off.

Pentium 4 2.8ghz (bout a year old)

IMO, the Intel heatsink is a pain in the butt to get off. You have to unhook the black sides from the board bracket.

it's probably stuck on w/ the interface material (thermal grease or whatever it is). if you wiggle it back and forth while lifting it should come off.

*disclaimer: if you wreck your CPU it's not my fault.

Lol.. I remember trying to get the sink off of a PII... except for Intel was nice enough to BOLT it onto the processor.

wiggle back and forth, not too much so you dont destroy pins on your CPU.
lift. Profit.

When I switched Dell motheboard, i tried this but i guess it didnt work enough and the wholeprocessor just came out with the heatsink fan.
awesome.
it still works though!

Just keep wiggling back and forth. IT takes quite a bit of force, especially when it has been on for a while (the thermal paste is like glue). I would try Cheezeit's suggestion. Try and put the CPU at full load for a little bit, then quickly shut down and try to pull it off...

If the CPU actually comes out with the heatsink, there could be problems. Some of the pins may be bent, so make sure to check it over very well. If there are a few bent, you may want to try to slide a credit card through the pins to try and straighten them out. Be extremely careful, you definately don't want to break one off...

After flipping the bars you still have to get the "hooks" off the "posts" by putting a flat head in between and prying slightly to get them removed.
