How the heck to clear "recent images" ?

I've googled this and come up with no solution that works.

I have a Moto G5 Plus which is fairly vanilla android.

If I go into an app ( for example, fitbit ) and want to change my profile photo, it will bring up a (system?) dialog that shows "Open From....Recent Images".

1. I'd prefer to never have recent images be a thing. If that's possible, great.
2. If I can't not have recent images, is there a way to clear them?
I've tried Storage->Internal shared storage->cached data->clear and that doesn't do it.

Ideas?

It looks like this is coming from either the Google drive or photos app (most likely drive). So I would go to settings, apps, Drive... Then tap on storage and clear the cache on the app itself. See what that does

I tried clearing the cache from both Drive and Google Photos, and that did not work.
Thanks for the suggestion.

If anyone else knows what this is (or have other ideas on things to try), please lemme know.
