When you download it all files downloaded are saved in a folder called Windows Update Setup Files located on your C: drive. This directory contains IEsetup and all that, but it looks in this directory for the files so you shouldn't have to download anything; so you can simply zip it up and just unzip it when you need to install it.

If you just want to download it there is an option in the IEsetup if you choose a custome install to save the files to install later, it basically just downloads them to this folder. Note that if you don't download everything for a full install, and later want something it will have to connect to download the missing files.

download the setup exe file and then do a custom install...it will give you a choice of download now and install later OR install now...

you will need to download it once, and then save it somewhere....
i suggest you do a full download so the next time you will have everything and don't need to connect again to install it.

The only problem is that when i run the setup file it didn't ask me for custom installation.. is it because i have already updated all my IE files or is it because i am running w2k that has already have 5.5 installed? thanks for all the help

run the exe file
accept the agreement (or if you want to read it first, go ahead ;) )
choose "install minimal or customize browser"
choose advanced (at bottom right)
choose "download only"

-> don't forget to choose ALL the packages, so you will have full package

have fun

AOL disks include an IE 5.5 exe file. Most likely, you would install the file and then unbrand AOL's customization. Although I have not personally tried this procedure, I will assume that there is no functional difference between Microsoft and AOL's versions of IE.

**EDIT**

I just checked on AOL's CD and IEsetup.exe was only 15MB. Obviously, this is not the full version. On Earthlink's CD, IE 5.0 was 51MB. If you want a free version of IE, I would suggest going to your computer store and pick up a free demo of a game or an ISP CD. One of those CD's should include IE 5.5.

Like I mentioned before... I went thru the whole setup and still they did not ask if I want to custom install or not.. they just install it for me...

I will try to get a hold of an aol cd and check that out..

other than that I guess the only way is to order a cd from Microsoft?? dang :( don't really wanna pay $15 to Bill

thanks

AOL cd has IE 5.5,
AT&T WorldNet cd has it too and even includes all additional languages addon.

If you don't receive them in mail, try to call them to request a free cd.

hmm.... strange... must be different IE version....
anyways, if it does install it for you... you should have C:\Windows Update Setup Files in your directory... just backup the files in there, since they are basically what you will get if you choose "download only"

other than that... maybe start hunting for AT&T cd

or .... (whispering) get netscape ;)
even if you order the netscape cd, it only cost $6.95 compared to msie $15... and yeah, they are rich enough that $15 is too much to pay for the cd....
