How Tell if TRIM Active?

I have a Dell Vostro Mini 9. This little laptop has a RunCore 32 GB PCI-e SSD but it does not support TRIM or garbage collection. Over time this machine has slowed to an unusable crawl in spite of my best efforts to manage what starts up when it boots and assuring everything unneeded is off like Aero etc. I assume the problem is do to my mistake in 2009 of being ignorant of the consequences of not having TRIM and/or garbage collection when I decided to buy this machine (Why not trust Dell? They certainly wouldn't sell me a machine that would predictably die a slow death over time.)

In any case I am stuck with with this piece of crap and want to make one last attempt at making it somewhat usable. So now my questions:

I read somewhere that having TRIM enabled when the drive does not support TRIM would slow the machine down. Is this true? I did check and found TRIM enabled so I disabled it. Just wondering if this will make a difference.

Is there anything at all that can be done with a third party app to restore this drive?

I am really hoping there is some solution because this is really a nice machine when traveling with just a carry on because of its very small size. It is now just so slow to be almost impossible to use.
